Make a cheap webcam look expensive
- Light comes first. Put a soft light in front of you, slightly above eye level. Daylight from a window works during the day. This one change does more than any new camera. See lighting for cam models.
- Turn off the ceiling light. Overhead lights cast shadows under your eyes and mix colors.
- Raise the camera to eye level or a little above, using a stack of books, a shelf or a cheap tripod.
- Wipe the lens. Fingerprints make everything look soft and hazy.
- Set focus and exposure in OBS instead of leaving everything on auto if the picture keeps shifting. See our OBS guide.
- Use a wired internet connection so the picture doesn't break up mid-show.
- Keep your background simple: a plain wall or a few soft accent lights looks clean and protects your privacy.
What to spend the rest of $100 on
| Spend on | Why |
|---|---|
| A small LED light | The biggest picture upgrade per dollar |
| A cheap tripod or clamp with a 1/4 inch thread | Lets you place the camera exactly where you want |
| A USB microphone (later) | Clear sound keeps viewers in your room; see the best microphones |

Questions people ask
Is a $50 webcam good enough for camming?
Yes, if you light yourself well. A budget 1080p webcam in good light looks better than an expensive one in a dark room.
Is 30 or 60 frames per second better?
60 looks smoother when you move. 30 is fine for most shows and easier on your computer and internet connection.
Should I use my phone instead?
A modern phone camera can look great. Check your cam site's broadcaster help to see whether it supports streaming from a phone.
