Cam Girl Setup Checklist: Everything You Need to Start

To start camming you need a webcam, one good light, a microphone, a computer or laptop, a stable internet connection and a tidy, private space. You can start with the camera and laptop you have and upgrade lighting first.

The minimum setup

  1. Webcam (or your laptop's camera to start)
  2. One soft light in front of you
  3. A USB microphone
  4. A computer with a wired internet connection
  5. A clean, private background

Bailey's advice from her 2020 guide still holds: "You don't need much to start." She spent ages researching the perfect setup before her first show and found it "wasn't the priority." Start simple, then upgrade the parts that make the biggest difference.

Camera

A 1080p webcam is enough to start. Larger sensors cope better with dim bedrooms, and 60 frames per second looks smoother when you move. Compare models in our guide to the best webcams for cam models, or see the best webcams under $100.

Lighting

Lighting is where to spend first. Put one soft light in front of you, slightly above eye level and a little to one side, turn off overhead lights, and close curtains so daylight doesn't mix with your lamps. See the best lighting for cam models and how to set it up.

Microphone

A USB microphone is a big step up from a laptop mic. Dynamic microphones (like the Shure MV7+ or Logitech G Yeti GX) pick up less room noise; condensers (like the RODE NT-USB+) capture more detail but more of the room too. For couples or moving around, a wireless clip-on system helps. Compare them in the best microphones for cam models.

Computer and internet

Most recent laptops can stream from a cam site's browser broadcaster. If you plan to use OBS with overlays or two cameras, a computer with a stronger processor helps; OBS's Auto-Configuration Wizard will tell you what your machine can handle. Use a wired connection where you can, and test your upload speed at the hour you plan to stream.

Mounts, furniture and room

A tripod or articulated arm with a standard 1/4 inch thread lets you place the camera exactly where you want. Make the space comfortable for long shows, keep a charger and water within reach but out of frame, and keep everything identifying out of shot. Our privacy guide has a full camera checklist.

Buying order on a budget

  1. Light (biggest improvement per dollar)
  2. USB microphone
  3. Tripod or mount
  4. Webcam
  5. Accent lighting and backdrop

Then set everything up in OBS and record a short test before your first show.

Questions people ask

What equipment do I need to start camming?

A webcam, a light, a microphone, a computer with a stable internet connection, and a private space. Many models start with a laptop's built-in camera and add a light first.

What should I upgrade first?

Lighting. One soft light in front of you improves the picture more than a new camera. Then a USB microphone, then the camera.

Do I need a 4K webcam?

Not to start. Viewers only see what your cam site streams, so check its broadcaster settings first. A good 1080p camera in good light looks better than 4K in a dark room.

Is WiFi good enough for camming?

It can work, but a wired Ethernet connection is more stable for long shows. Test your upload speed at the time of day you plan to stream.
